本經與巴利語聖典《中部》第67經《Cātumasuttaṃ》的內容一樣,稍有不同處在於尾段佛陀對目犍連尊者的開示。

    如果,正法的領域就像是一個國家,那麼佛陀就是法王,而舍利弗與目犍連兩位尊者就是法將與法臣。舍利弗尊者與目犍連尊者在佛陀的身旁所扮演的角色也有所不同,舍利弗尊者通常是協助眾生建立「正見」,幫助眾生成就初果;而目犍連尊者則常常是一路督導眾生走到最後解脫的盡頭才放手。因此,佛陀在《中阿含經》的《四諦分別經》(巴利語聖典《中部》第141經之《Saccavibhaṅgasuttaṃ)中說舍利弗尊者就好像是生母一樣,而目犍連尊者則猶如養母一般。

    很感謝莊春江居士辛苦整理並用心建構出的南北傳經典對照網站,我們可以發現四阿含經文各自與巴利語聖典的四部內容一致,但並非雜阿含經文就一定可以對照巴利語的《相應部》,往往有時候某一篇雜阿含經文的內容很可能在巴利語的《中部》、《長部》或《增支部》才找得到;就如同本篇經文出自《增壹阿含經》,但卻與巴利語聖典的《中部》第67經的內容相同。也就是說,並不是說《雜阿含經》的經文就一定只能在《相應部》的經文中找得到,其餘以此類推。總之,四阿含經文與巴利語聖典的四部經文彼此間很可能是處於交叉排列組合的對照關係。

    本經出自《增壹阿含經》,而如果法友看到或聽到有人在貶抑或質疑《增壹阿含經》,望諸法友秉持正念,萬勿人云亦云而犯下謗法的共惡業為禱。

    我是這樣聽聞的:

    有一次,佛陀與五百位大比丘一起暫時住在古印度的釋翅闇婆梨果園林。當時,尊者舍利弗與尊者目乾連剛好結束夏安居,他們帶領五百位比丘在人群間行腳遊方,他們逐漸來到了釋翅村中。

    遠道而行來的比丘與在地的比丘相見歡,大家彼此熱絡問候對方,因為人數眾多,彼此的衣缽發出碰撞聲,於是場面顯得非常喧嘩吵鬧。

    這時,世尊聽到諸比丘發出的高分貝吵鬧音響,便問阿難:「是誰的聲音在此園中這麼大?怎麼那麼像木石碰撞破碎之聲?

    阿難跟佛陀報告:「是舍利弗及目連帶領五百比丘來此地,因為大家好久沒見了,所以聲音很吵。」

    佛陀交代阿難:「你去告訴舍利弗與目乾連比丘,讓他們帶人趕緊離開此地。」

    阿難聽從佛陀的指示,隨即前往舍利弗與目乾連比丘的所在處,轉達佛陀要他們離開的意思。

    舍利弗說:「好的。」

    於是,舍利弗與目乾連隨即帶領五百比丘走出園林並離去。

    釋族的人民聽說舍利弗與目乾連比丘被世尊趕走,趕緊到舍利弗與目乾連比丘的面前,他們跪在地上對諸比丘頂禮,問舍利弗:「諸位賢者,請問你們要去哪裡?」

    舍利弗說:「我們在找安身之處。」

    諸釋族人民說:「諸位賢者,請等一下,待我等當面向如來懺悔及求情。」

    於是,諸釋族人民趕緊跑到世尊的面前,他們跪在地上,額頭觸地,對佛陀頂禮,然後一齊起身坐在一旁,他們說:「懇求世尊寬恕遠來比丘的過錯,懇請世尊教誨他們,這些遠道而來的比丘當中有一些是剛剛加入僧團的初學比丘,他們尚未親睹佛陀的尊顏,難保將來沒有變悔退轉之心,就好比植物的幼苗如果不遇雨水的滋潤便長不大。」

    同一時間,大梵天王也知道了這件事,便猶如大力士屈伸手臂的短暫時間,從梵天界消失,瞬間移動,出現在佛陀的面前。祂跪在地上頂禮世尊,然後起身站在一旁。

    大梵天王也勸世尊:「懇求世尊寬恕遠來比丘所犯的過錯,對他們施以適當的教誨,這些比丘當中,有的比丘尚未解脫,甚至連初果都沒成就,難免心懷變悔退轉之心,這些人如果沒有親覩如來的聖顏,就有可能改變心意而還俗,回到塵世從拾本業,這就猶如新生的小牛,剛出生便失其母,容易憂愁不食,這樣牠們就長不大,甚至可能早夭。同樣的道理,若新學比丘不得親覩如來,易遠離正法。」

    於是,世尊接受了釋族人民的勸諫以及大梵天王的小牛之喻,世尊看了一眼阿難,阿難便知世尊的意思。

    阿難隨即前往舍利弗與目乾連比丘的所在地,說道:「天神與人民幫你求情,如來願意與眾僧相見了。」

    舍利弗告訴諸比丘:「你們各自收拾好衣缽,大家一起前往拜見世尊,如來已接受我等的懺悔了。」

    於是,舍利弗與目揵連帶領五百比丘來到世尊的面前,大家跪在地上頂禮,然後起身坐在一旁。

    佛陀問舍利弗:「剛才我把諸比丘僧給趕走,你有什麼想法?」

    舍利弗說:「剛才如來趕走諸眾僧,我便心想:『如來好樂閑靜,獨處無為,不樂喧閙,所以才趕走諸聖眾。』」

    佛陀問舍利弗:「那麼你之後又有甚麼樣的想法?聖眾是依止誰呢(以誰為首)?」

    舍利弗回答:「僧眾是以我為首。之後,我便打算解散僧眾,獨自在安靜處修行,我不打算在鬧市中修行。」

    佛陀對舍利弗說:「你這樣說不對。你不該這麼想:『我當解散僧團,獨自在閑靜之處修行。』。如今的僧眾難道不是依止舍利弗與目乾連比丘嗎?」

    接著,世尊問大目乾連:「你呢?當我趕走諸眾僧,你有何感想?」

    目乾連回答:「當如來趕走眾僧,我便想:『如來想要安靜,故趕走聖眾。』」

    佛陀問:「後來呢?後來你有何想法?」

    目乾連回答:「雖然,如來趕走諸僧眾,但我們仍應照顧好眾僧,令眾僧不分散。」

    佛陀讚嘆目乾連:「善哉!目連,誠如你所言,僧團之標首,唯我與你們二人。從今起,目乾連當教誨諸後學比丘,使他們在漫漫長夜之中永處安隱之處,無令其半途退轉而墮落生死輪迴。

    若有比丘成就以下九惡法者,其修行必將於當生中不會有任何的進步,是哪九惡法呢?一、與惡知識來往互動及親近;二、無事時便浪費時間在熱鬧的群眾間遊蕩;三、長期病痛纏身或臥病在床;四、好囤積財貨;五、貪愛執著衣缽;六、放任心意胡亂造作及顛倒妄想、無法集中精神修定;七、沒有觀慧明覺;八、不解法義的旨趣;九、不隨時虛心接受教誨。以上,目連,若有比丘成就以上九惡法,其修行必將於現世中沒有任何的進步,也得不到法義的潤澤。

    反之,假設有比丘能成就以下九善法者便有所成就,是哪九善法呢?一、與善知識來往互動;二、修行正法、不著邪業;三、常獨處修行、不樂喧鬧的人間;四、少病健康;五、不囤積諸金錢財寶;六、不貪著衣缽;七、勤行精進修定、無有散亂心;八、聞法義便解曉;九、隨時聽法、無有厭足。以上,目連,若有比丘成就以上九善法者,其修行必將於現世中獲得很多的好處。

    因此,目連,當念茲在茲辛勤教誨諸比丘,使他們在漫漫長夜之中抵達無為(涅槃)之處。」

    接著,世尊便說以下的偈語:

常念自覺悟,勿著於非法,所修應正行,得度生死難。
作是而獲是,作此獲此福,眾生流浪久,斷於老病死。
以辦更不習,復更造非行,如此放逸人,成於有漏行。
設有勤加心,琣b心首者,展轉相教誡,便成無漏行。

    佛陀最後叮囑:「是故,目乾連,當對諸比丘作此教誨,令他們如是學習。」

    接著,世尊與諸比丘說極妙之法,令大家產生歡喜之心。當諸比丘聞法之後,在場有六十多位比丘竟然證得了漏盡解脫,成為阿羅漢。諸比丘聽聞佛陀所說的法,都心生歡喜,並依法奉行。

  聞如是:
  一時,佛在釋翅闇婆梨果園,與大比丘眾五百人俱。
  是時,尊者舍利弗、尊者目乾連於彼夏坐已,將五百比丘在人間遊化,漸漸來至釋翅村中。
  爾時,行來比丘及住比丘各各自相謂言,共相問訊,又且聲音高大。
  爾時,世尊聞諸比丘音響高大,即告阿難曰:
  「今此園中是誰音響聲大乃爾,如似破木石之聲。」
  阿難白佛言:
  「今,舍利弗及目連將五百比丘來在此,行來比丘{}[]住比丘共相問訊,故有此聲耳。」
  佛告阿難曰:
  「汝速遣舍利弗、目乾連比丘,不須住此。」
  是時,阿難受教已,即往至舍利弗、目乾連比丘所,即語之曰:
  「世尊有教,速離此去,不須住此。」
  舍利弗報曰:「唯然受教。」
  爾時,舍利弗、目乾連即出彼園中,將五百比丘涉道而去。
  爾時,諸釋聞舍利弗、目乾連比丘為世尊所遣,即往至舍利弗、目乾連比丘所,頭面禮足,白舍利弗曰:
  「諸賢!欲何所趣向?」
  舍利弗報曰:
  「我等為如來所遣,各求安處。」
  是時,諸釋白舍利弗言:
  「諸賢!小留意,我等當向如來懺悔。」
  是時,諸釋即往至世尊所,頭面禮足,在一面坐,白世尊言:
  「唯願世尊原捨遠來比丘過咎,唯願世尊以時教誨,其中,遠來比丘初學道者新來入法中,未覲尊顏,備有變悔之心,猶如茂苗不遇潤澤,便不成就,今,此比丘亦復如是,不覲如來而去者,恐能有變悔之心。」
  是時,梵天王知如來心中所念,猶如力士屈伸臂頃,從梵天沒,來至如來所,頭面禮足,在一面立。爾時,梵天王白世尊言:
  「唯願世尊原捨遠來比丘所作愆過,以時教誨,其中,或有比丘未究竟者,便懷變悔之心,彼人不覩如來顏像,便有變意,還就本業,亦如新生犢子,生失其母,憂愁不食,此亦如是,若新學比丘不得覩如來者,便當遠離此正法。」
  爾時,世尊便受釋種之諫,及梵天王犢子之喻。是時,世尊顧盻,阿難便生斯念:
  「如來{}[]受諸人民及天人之諫。」
  是時,阿難即往至舍利弗、目乾連比丘所,而語之曰:
  「如來欲得與眾僧相見,天及人民皆陳啟此理。」
  爾時,舍利弗告諸比丘曰:
  「汝等各收攝衣鉢,共往世尊所,然,如來已受我等懺悔。」
  是時,舍利弗、目揵連將五百比丘至世尊所,頭面禮足,在一面坐。

  「吾向者遣諸比丘僧,於汝意云何?」
  舍利弗言:
  「向者如來遣諸眾僧,我便作是念:『如來好遊閑靜,獨處無為,不樂在閙,是故遣諸聖眾耳。』」

  「汝後復生何念?聖眾是{}誰之累?」
  舍利弗白佛言:
  「時,我,世尊!復生此念:『我亦當在閑靜獨遊,不處市閙中。』」

  「勿作是語,亦莫生此念,云:『我當在閑靜之處也。』如今聖眾之累,豈非依舍利弗、目乾連比丘乎?」
  爾時,世尊告大目乾連曰:
  「我遣諸眾僧,汝有何念?」
  目乾連白佛言:
  「如來遣眾僧,我便生斯念:『如來欲得獨處無為,故遣聖眾耳。』」
  佛告目乾連:「汝後復生何念?」

  「然,今如來遣諸聖眾,我等宜還收集之,令不分散。」

  「善哉!目連!如汝所說,眾中之標首,唯吾與汝二人耳。自今已往,目乾連當教誨諸後學比丘,使長夜之中永處安隱之處,無令中退,墮落生死。若有比丘成就九法者,於現法中不得長大,云何為九?與惡知識從事親近、非事痝葙C行、琠磢爣w、好畜財貨、貪著衣鉢、多虛乾妄亂意非定、無有慧明、不解義趣、不隨時受誨,是謂,目連!若比丘成就此九者,於現法中不得長大有所潤及。
  設有比丘能成就九者便有所成辦,云何為九?與善知識從事、修行正法不著邪業、盚C獨處不樂人間、少病無患、亦復不多畜諸財寶、不貪著衣鉢、勤行精進無有亂心、聞義便解更不{}[]受、隨時聽法無有厭足,是謂,目連!若有比丘成就此九法者,於現法中多所饒益。是故,目連,當念勤加往誨諸比丘,使長夜之中致無為之處。」

   157. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā cātumāyaṃ viharati āmalakīvane. Tena kho pana samayena sāriputtamoggallānappamukhāni pañcamattāni bhikkhusatāni cātumaṃ anuppattāni honti bhagavantaṃ dassanāya. Te ca āgantukā bhikkhū nevāsikehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ paṭisammodamānā senāsanāni paññāpayamānā pattacīvarāni paṭisāmayamānā uccāsaddā mahāsaddā ahesuṃ. Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi– “ke panete, ānanda, uccāsaddā mahāsaddā, kevaṭṭā maññe macchavilope”ti? “Etāni, bhante, sāriputtamoggallānappamukhāni pañcamattāni bhikkhusatāni cātumaṃ anuppattāni bhagavantaṃ dassanāya. Addasaṃsu kho cātumeyyakā sakyā te bhikkhū dūratova āgacchante; disvāna yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū etadavocuṃ– “handa, kahaṃ pana tumhe āyasmanto gacchathā”ti? “Bhagavatā kho, āvuso, bhikkhusaṅgho paṇāmito”ti. “Tenahāyasmanto muhuttaṃ nisīdatha, appeva nāma mayaṃ sakkuṇeyyāma bhagavantaṃ pasādetun”ti. “Evamāvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū cātumeyyakānaṃ sakyānaṃ paccassosuṃ. Atha kho brahmā sahampati ekaṃsaṃ uttarāsaṅgaṃ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṃ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “abhinandatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhusaṅghaṃ; abhivadatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhusaṅghaṃ. Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhikkhū āmantesi– “uṭṭhethāvuso, gaṇhatha pattacīvaraṃ. Pasādito bhagavā cātumeyyakehi ca sakyehi brahmunā ca sahampatinā bījūpamena ca taruṇūpamena cā”ti. “Evamāvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa paṭissutvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pattacīvaramādāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu.    161. Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi– “cattārimāni, bhikkhave, bhayāni udakorohante pāṭikaṅkhitabbāni. Katamāni cattāri? Ūmibhayaṃ, kumbhīlabhayaṃ, āvaṭṭabhayaṃ, susukābhayaṃ – imāni, bhikkhave, cattāri bhayāni udakorohante pāṭikaṅkhitabbāni. Evameva kho, bhikkhave, cattārimāni bhayāni idhekacce puggale imasmiṃ dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajite pāṭikaṅkhitabbāni. Katamāni cattāri? Ūmibhayaṃ, kumbhīlabhayaṃ, āvaṭṭabhayaṃ, susukābhayaṃ.
   162. “Katamañca, bhikkhave, ūmibhayaṃ? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco kulaputto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajito hoti– ‘otiṇṇomhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi dukkhotiṇṇo dukkhapareto; appeva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ti. Tamenaṃ tathā pabbajitaṃ samānaṃ sabrahmacārī ovadanti, anusāsanti– ‘evaṃ te abhikkamitabbaṃ, evaṃ te paṭikkamitabbaṃ, evaṃ te ālokitabbaṃ, evaṃ te vilokitabbaṃ, evaṃ te samiñjitabbaṃ, evaṃ te pasāritabbaṃ, evaṃ te saṅghāṭipattacīvaraṃ dhāretabban’ti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘mayaṃ kho pubbe agāriyabhūtā samānā aññe ovadāma, anusāsāma. Ime panamhākaṃ puttamattā maññe, nattamattā maññe, amhe ovaditabbaṃ anusāsitabbaṃ maññantī’ti. So sikkhaṃ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattati. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, ūmibhayassa bhīto sikkhaṃ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvatto. ‘Ūmibhayan’ti kho, bhikkhave, kodhupāyāsassetaṃ adhivacanaṃ.
   163. “Katamañca, bhikkhave, kumbhīlabhayaṃ? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco kulaputto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajito hoti– ‘otiṇṇomhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi dukkhotiṇṇo dukkhapareto; appeva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ti. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘mayaṃ kho pubbe agāriyabhūtā samānā yaṃ icchāma taṃ khādāma, yaṃ na icchāma na taṃ khādāma; yaṃ icchāma taṃ bhuñjāma, yaṃ na icchāma na taṃ bhuñjāma; yaṃ icchāma taṃ sāyāma, yaṃ na icchāma na taṃ sāyāma; yaṃ icchāma taṃ pivāma, yaṃ na icchāma na taṃ pivāma; kappiyampi khādāma, akappiyampi khādāma; kappiyampi bhuñjāma, akappiyampi bhuñjāma; kappiyampi sāyāma, akappiyampi sāyāma; kappiyampi pivāma, akappiyampi pivāma; kālepi khādāma, vikālepi khādāma; kālepi bhuñjāma vikālepi bhuñjāma; kālepi sāyāma, vikālepi sāyāma; kālepi pivāma, vikālepi pivāma. Yampi no saddhā gahapatikā divā vikāle paṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ denti tatthapime mukhāvaraṇaṃ maññe karontī’ti. So sikkhaṃ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattati. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, kumbhīlabhayassa bhīto sikkhaṃ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvatto. ‘Kumbhīlabhayan’ti kho, bhikkhave, odarikattassetaṃ adhivacanaṃ.
   164. “Katamañca, bhikkhave, āvaṭṭabhayaṃ? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco kulaputto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajito hoti– ‘otiṇṇomhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi dukkhotiṇṇo dukkhapareto; appeva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ti. So evaṃ pabbajito samāno pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya gāmaṃ vā nigamaṃ vā piṇḍāya pavisati. Arakkhiteneva kāyena arakkhitāya vācāya anupaṭṭhitāya satiyā asaṃvutehi indriyehi so tattha passati gahapatiṃ vā gahapatiputtaṃ vā pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappitaṃ samaṅgībhūtaṃ paricārayamānaṃ. Tassa evaṃ hoti– ‘mayaṃ kho pubbe agāriyabhūtā samānā pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappitā samaṅgībhūtā paricārimhā. Saṃvijjanti kho pana me kule bhogā. Sakkā bhoge ca bhuñjituṃ puññāni ca kātun’ti. So sikkhaṃ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattati. Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, āvaṭṭabhayassa bhīto sikkhaṃ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvatto. ‘Āvaṭṭabhayan’ti kho, bhikkhave, pañcannetaṃ kāmaguṇānaṃ adhivacanaṃ.
   165. “Katamañca bhikkhave, susukābhayaṃ? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco kulaputto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajito hoti– ‘otiṇṇomhi jātiyā jarāya maraṇena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi dukkhotiṇṇo dukkhapareto; appeva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethā’ti. So evaṃ pabbajito samāno pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya gāmaṃ vā nigamaṃ vā piṇḍāya pavisati. Arakkhiteneva kāyena arakkhitāya vācāya anupaṭṭhitāya satiyā asaṃvutehi indriyehi so tattha passati mātugāmaṃ dunnivatthaṃ vā duppārutaṃ vā. Tassa mātugāmaṃ disvā dunnivatthaṃ vā duppārutaṃ vā rāgo cittaṃ anuddhaṃseti. So rāgānuddhaṃsena cittena sikkhaṃ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattati Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, susukābhayassa bhīto sikkhaṃ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvatto. ‘Susukābhayan’ti kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmassetaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri bhayāni, idhekacce puggale imasmiṃ dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajite pāṭikaṅkhitabbānī”ti.
   Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti.
   Cātumasuttaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ sattamaṃ.
