本經與巴利聖典《相應部》第16經第9篇《Jhānābhiññasuttaṃ》的內容完全相同。
摩訶迦葉尊者因為修頭陀行,因此常離群獨自靜修,身上穿的又是粗糙破舊的糞掃衣,加上年事已高,不修鬢髮,衣衫襤褸,儀容不整,因此有許多新學的年輕比丘以貌取人看不起摩訶迦葉尊者。
佛陀為了不讓這些不具慧眼的比丘因輕慢聖者的身口意惡業,障礙了自己的修行,因此讓出自己的半個座位給摩訶迦葉,給予迦葉特殊的崇高禮遇,讓比丘們知道世尊非常看重摩訶迦葉;此外,為了彰顯摩訶迦葉的功德,佛陀告訴大家摩訶迦葉跟佛一樣具有殊勝的四禪八定及不可思議的大神通等成就。

我是這樣聽聞的:
這是佛陀暫時住在古印度舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園林時候的事。
當時,摩訶迦葉尊者因為長期住在舍衛國的偏僻深山森林裡,沒有剃髮,以致於他留著長鬚髮,穿著弊納衣(糞掃衣)。
有一天,他下山走出森林,前來頂禮佛陀。 當時,世尊正被無數大眾圍繞著,大家都很恭敬聽佛說法。
而在場有許多比丘看見摩訶迦葉從遠方而來,他們看見尊者不修邊幅、衣衫襤褸的模樣,因以貌取人的世俗心態便看不起摩訶迦葉,起了輕慢心,出言不遜道:「這是哪裡來的比丘?衣服如此破爛,也不整理一下自己的儀容,衣服這麼寬鬆,完全不合身,竟然就這樣隨便來見佛!」
這時,世尊以他心通知悉在場許多比丘心中所生起的念頭,便對摩訶迦葉親切地招呼:「歡迎!迦葉!快來我這裡坐,我這裡還有半個座位可以分你坐。迦葉,我跟你到底是誰先出家的?是你嗎?還是我呢?」
在場許多比丘看見世尊如此禮遇摩訶迦葉,心裡驚訝到不行,都嚇到全身汗毛皆竪,並相互交頭接耳議論紛紛:「奇怪了?那個摩訶迦葉究竟何德何能?能讓世尊如此敬重?還分半個座位給他坐?」
這時,摩訶迦葉尊者雙手合掌對佛說:「世尊!佛是我師,我是弟子。」
佛陀對迦葉說:「沒錯,沒錯,我為大師,你是弟子,你今且坐,隨其所安。」
於是,摩訶迦葉尊者便跪在地上,額頭觸地,稽首頂禮佛足,然後起身退坐在一旁。
接著,世尊想要警悟諸比丘不可以貌取人,便以摩訶迦葉尊者與自己同樣所證得的殊勝廣大功德,示現給大家知道,便對諸比丘說:「我離欲惡不善法,有覺(尋)、有觀(伺),初禪具足住,因此不管是白天黑夜或日日夜夜,只要我願意,都能隨意安住於初禪禪境,而摩訶迦葉跟我一樣,也具有這樣的成就;我可以隨心所欲想進入第二、第三、第四禪,且不管白天黑夜或日日夜夜,只要我願意,都能安住於任何一種禪境中,摩訶迦葉也跟我一樣,有這樣的成就;我可以隨心所欲入慈悲喜捨、空入處、識入處、無所有入處、非想非非想入處;開發出神通境界如:天耳、他心智、宿命智、生死智、漏盡智具足住,不分白天黑夜或日日夜夜,迦葉比丘也跟我一樣,都具有以上的殊勝成就。」
當世尊在大家的面前公然稱讚摩訶迦葉跟自己一樣擁有廣大勝妙的功德之後,諸比丘聽聞佛陀所說的話,都心生歡喜。

如是我聞:
一時,佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
爾時,尊者摩訶迦葉久住舍衛國阿練若床坐處,長鬚髮,著弊納衣,來詣佛所。
爾時,世尊無數大眾圍繞說法。
時,諸比丘見摩訶迦葉從遠而來,見已,於尊者摩訶迦葉所起輕慢心,言:
「此何等比丘,衣服麁陋,無有儀容而來,衣服佯佯而來?」
爾時,世尊知諸比丘心之所念,告摩訶迦葉:
「善來!迦葉!於此半座,我今竟[不?]知誰先出家,汝耶、我耶?」
彼諸比丘心生恐怖,身毛皆竪,並相謂言:
「奇哉!尊者!彼尊者摩訶迦葉大德、大力、大師弟子,請以半座。」
爾時,尊者摩訶迦葉合掌白佛言:「世尊!佛是我師,我是弟子。」
佛告迦葉:
「如是,如是,我為大師,汝是弟子,汝今且坐,隨其所安。」
尊者摩訶迦葉稽首佛足,退坐一面。
爾時,世尊復欲警悟諸比丘,復以尊者摩訶迦葉同己所得殊勝廣大功德,為現眾故,告諸比丘:
「我離欲惡不善法,有覺、有觀,初禪具足住,若日、若夜、若日夜,摩訶迦葉亦復如我:離欲惡不善法,……乃至初禪具足住,若日、若夜、若日夜;我欲第二、第三、第四禪具足住,若日、若夜、若日夜,彼摩訶迦葉亦復如是,……乃至第四禪具足住,若日、若夜、若日夜;我隨所欲慈悲喜捨、空入處、識入處、無所有入處、非想非非想入處;神通境界、天耳、他心智、宿命智、生死智、漏盡智具足住,若日、若夜、若日夜,彼迦葉比丘亦復如是,……乃至漏盡智具足住,若日、若夜、若日夜。」
爾時,世尊於無量大眾中稱歎摩訶迦葉同己廣大勝妙功德已,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

152. Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati …pe… “ahaṃ, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi
vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ
pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharāmi. Kassapopi bhikkhave,
yāvadeva ākaṅkhati vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ
savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati”.
“Ahaṃ bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ
sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodibhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ pītisukhaṃ
dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharāmi. Kassapopi, bhikkhave, yāvadeva
ākaṅkhati vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā …pe… dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati.
“Ahaṃ, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharāmi
sato ca sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedemi, yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti–
‘upekkhako satimā sukhavihārī’ti tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharāmi.
Kassapopi, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhati pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca
viharati sato ca sampajāno, sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti, yaṃ taṃ ariyā
ācikkhanti– ‘upekkhako satimā sukhavihārī’ti tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja
viharati.
“Ahaṃ, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā
pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṃ atthaṅgamā adukkhamasukhaṃ
upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharāmi. Kassapopi,
bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhati sukhassa ca pahānā …pe… catutthaṃ jhānaṃ
upasampajja viharati.
“Ahaṃ, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi sabbaso rūpasaññānaṃ samatikkamā
paṭighasaññānaṃ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṃ amanasikārā ananto ākāsoti
ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharāmi. Kassapopi bhikkhave, yāvadeva
ākaṅkhati sabbaso rūpasaññānaṃ samatikkamā …pe… ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ
upasampajja viharati.
“Ahaṃ, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi sabbaso ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ samatikkamma
anantaṃ viññāṇanti viññāṇañcāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharāmi. Kassapopi
bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhati sabbaso ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ samatikkamma anantaṃ
viññāṇanti viññāṇañcāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.
“Ahaṃ, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi sabbaso viññāṇañcāyatanaṃ samatikkamma
‘natthi kiñcī’ti ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharāmi. Kassapopi, bhikkhave,

bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi sabbaso ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ samatikkamma

“Ahaṃ bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi anekavihitaṃ iddhividhaṃ paccanubhomi
ekopi hutvā bahudhā homi, bahudhāpi hutvā eko homi; āvibhāvaṃ, tirobhāvaṃ,
tirokuṭṭaṃ, tiropākāraṃ, tiropabbataṃ, asajjamāno gacchāmi, seyyathāpi ākāse;
pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṃ karomi, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne
gacchāmi, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṃ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kamāmi, seyyathāpi

ca. Kassapopi, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhati dibbāya sotadhātuyā …pe… dūre
santike ca. “Ahaṃ bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi parasattānaṃ parapuggalānaṃ
cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi– sarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ sarāgaṃ cittanti pajānāmi,

seyyathidaṃ – ekampi jātiṃ dvepi jātiyo tissopi jātiyo catassopi jātiyo
pañcapi jātiyo dasapi jātiyo vīsampi jātiyo tiṃsampi jātiyo cattālīsampi
jātiyo paññāsampi jātiyo jātisatampi jātisahassampi jātisatasahassampi,
anekepi saṃvaṭṭakappe anekepi vivaṭṭakappe anekepi saṃvaṭṭavivaṭṭakappe–
‘amutrāsiṃ evaṃnāmo evaṃgotto evaṃvaṇṇo evamāhāro
evaṃsukhadukkhappaṭisaṃvedī evamāyupariyanto so tato cuto amutra udapādiṃ;
tatrāpāsiṃ evaṃnāmo evaṃgotto evaṃvaṇṇo evamāhāro
evaṃsukhadukkhappaṭisaṃvedī evamāyupariyanto, so tato cuto idhūpapanno’ti.
Iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ anekavihitaṃ pubbenivāsaṃ anussarāmi. Kassapopi,
bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhati anekavihitaṃ pubbenivāsaṃ anussarati,
seyyathidaṃ– ekampi jātiṃ …pe… iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ anekavihitaṃ
pubbenivāsaṃ anussarati. “Ahaṃ, bhikkhave, yāvadeva ākaṅkhāmi dibbena
cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passāmi cavamāne upapajjamāne
hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe, sugate duggate yathākammūpage satte pajānāmi–
‘ime vata, bhonto, sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacīduccaritena
samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṃ upavādakā micchādiṭṭhikā
micchādiṭṭhikammasamādānā; te kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ
vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapannā, ime vā pana, bhonto, sattā kāyasucaritena
samannāgatā vacīsucaritena samannāgatā manosucaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṃ
anupavādakā sammādiṭṭhikā sammādiṭṭhikammasamādānā; te kāyassa bhedā paraṃ
maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapannā’ti. Iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena
atikkantamānusakena satte passāmi cavamāne upapajjamāne hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe

“Ahaṃ, bhikkhave, āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ
diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharāmi. Kassapopi,
bhikkhave, āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva
dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī”ti. Navamaṃ.
