本經是佛陀教導大家如何修持安那般那念的方法。本經與巴利聖典《相應部》第54經的內容完全相同。

    經中提到「繫念面前」,這是什麼意思呢?莊春江居士引用菩提比丘長老的英譯:「在他面前建立深切注意」(set up mindfulness in front of him, establishing mindfulness before him),並引《清淨道論》的解說,所謂「面前的正念」是指「在鼻尖上或在上唇中心上」(at the tip of the nose or at the centre of the upper lip)。不過,各位或許也可以參考《中阿含經》的《增上心經》及《大念處經》中的共同一段《身念處》記載:「以正念繫念在「齒齒相著」及「舌逼上齶」這兩個動作上」。總之,各位可以自行練習嘗試。

    另外,經中提到「身止息」一詞,這又是什麼意思?一般講到「止息」大概都是指「輕安」之意,也就是「身猗息/身止息/身得止息(SA);身獲柔軟(GA);止身;止息身(MA);身心安隱(DA)」,南傳解作「身體的寧靜」(kāyapassaddhi,另譯為「身體的輕安」),菩提比丘長老英譯為「身體的寧靜」(tranquillity of body)[動詞「身寧靜;身變得寧靜」(kāyo passambhati),過去分詞「身已寧靜」(passaddho kāyo)參照],並引註釋書的解說認為這是指「於三蘊(受、想、行)苦惱的寧靜(平靜)」。

    但有另一派不同的看法,有禪師依《阿毘達摩論》主張當身與心同步成對出現時,「身」都被解說為「心所」(cetasika),也就是執行第二階段認知的功能。

    不過,不管是哪一種解釋,那都是修持安那般那念所體驗到的結果與經驗,我們無須臆測戲論,到底哪一種看法才對,就請諸君自己親自來體驗吧,這不正是「法」的意義嗎?(巴利語對「法」的解釋為:世尊所善說的法,是直接可見、即時的,能通達正向,請你親自來體驗,智者都應該自己去體驗。svākkhāto bhagavatā sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhī

我是這樣聽聞的: 

有一次,佛陀暫時住在古印度的舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園林裡。 

當時,世尊告訴諸比丘:「你們應當勤修安那般那念。若比丘修習安那般那念,能精進認真修習者,便得身心喜、輕安、樂,有覺(尋)、有觀(伺),入定寂滅、專一,明分想修習滿足。

該怎麼修安那般那念來入定呢?不管這個比丘是不是住在聚落或城市裡,當他在早晨著衣持缽、走入村裡乞食的時候,他都應善護其身,守護諸根門,以正念善繫住心。

當他乞食完畢,回到住處,收拾衣缽,洗乾淨腳。他可或走入森林中、或禪房、或樹下,或空曠的露地。

然後,客觀地注意自己的呼吸,保持這樣的練習與覺知,不要去調整控制或改變它們。

不論呼吸的氣息是長或短,都清楚覺知一切的呼吸情況。

當吸氣時,清楚覺知吸氣;當呼氣時,也清楚覺知呼氣。

乃至當呼吸漸漸變得微細時,也清楚覺知呼吸已變微細。

當有輕安的體驗產生時,清楚知道有輕安了;

一樣繼續觀注呼吸,清楚覺知呼與吸的每一個律動,保持這樣的練習與覺知,不要刻意去控制或改變它們;

當有喜的覺受產生時,清楚覺知有喜的覺受;當有樂的覺受產生時,清楚覺知有樂的覺受;

一樣繼續觀注呼與吸,清楚覺知呼與吸的每一個律動,保持這樣的練習與覺知,不要刻意去控制或改變它們;

當心有悅受時,清楚覺知心有悅受;當心已一境(入定),清楚覺知心已一境(入定);

繼續這樣的練習,不要刻意去控制或改變呼吸;當心已超越了呼吸(譯註:呼吸停下來,即四禪),仍清楚覺知心已超越了呼吸;

在呼與吸之間,正觀無常(依遠離),正觀斷貪,正觀無欲(依無欲),正觀滅入息(依滅,即諸行滅);

在呼與吸之間,心得解脫了,清楚覺知心得解脫了;

以上,就是修安那般那念,能令身止息、心止息,有覺有觀,寂滅、純一(入定),明分想修習滿足。」 

當佛陀說完本經後,諸比丘聽聞佛所說的法,都心生歡喜,並依法奉行。

(八三) 如是我聞: 一時,
佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。 爾時,世尊告諸比丘:
「修習安那般那念。若比丘修習安那般那念,多修習者,
得身心止息,有覺有觀,寂滅、純一,
明分想修習滿足。何等為修習安那般那念多修習已,
身心止息,有覺有觀,寂滅、純一,
明分想修習滿足?是比丘若依聚落、城邑止住,
晨朝著衣持缽,入村乞食,善護其身,守諸根門,
善繫心住。乞食已,還住處,舉衣缽,洗足已,
或入林中、閑房、樹下,或空露地,端身正坐,
繫念面前,斷世貪愛,離欲清淨,瞋恚、睡眠、
掉悔、疑斷,度諸疑惑,於諸善法心得決定。
遠離五蓋煩惱於心,令慧力羸,為障礙分,
不趣涅槃。念於內息,繫念善學,念於外息,
繫念善學。息長息短,覺知一切身入息,

Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhu kāye kāyānupssī vihrti ātāpī smpjāno stimā vineyy loke hijjhādomnssṃ, upṭṭhitāss tsmiṃ smye sti hoti smmuṭṭhā. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhuno upṭṭhitā sti hoti smmuṭṭhā, stismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti. Stismojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, stismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “So tthāsto vihrnto tṃ dhmmṃ pññāy pviinti pviyti privīmṃsṃ āpjjti. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhu tthāsto vihrnto tṃ dhmmṃ pññāy pviinti pviyti privīmṃsṃ āpjjti, dhmmviysmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, dhmmviysmojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, dhmmviysmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “Tss tṃ dhmmṃ pññāy pviinto pviyto privīmṃsṃ āpjjto ārddhṃ hoti vīriyṃ sllīnṃ. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhuno tṃ dhmmṃ pññāy pviinto pviyto privīmṃsṃ āpjjto ārddhṃ hoti vīriyṃ sllīnṃ, vīriysmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, vīriysmojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, vīriysmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “Ārddhvīriyss uppjjti pīti nirāmisā. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhuno ārddhvīriyss uppjjti pīti nirāmisā, pītismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, pītismojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, pītismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “Pītimnss kāyopi pssmhti, ittmpi pssmhti. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhuno pītimnss kāyopi pssmhti, ittmpi pssmhti, pssddhismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, pssddhismojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, pssddhismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “Pssddhkāyss sukhino ittṃ smādhiyti. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhuno pssddhkāyss sukhino ittṃ smādhiyti, smādhismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, smādhismojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, smādhismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “So tthāsmāhitṃ ittṃ sādhukṃ jjhupekkhitā hoti. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhu tthāsmāhitṃ ittṃ sādhukṃ jjhupekkhitā hoti, upekkhāsmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, upekkhāsmojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, upekkhāsmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   . “Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhu vednāsu …pe… itte… dhmmesu dhmmānupssī vihrti ātāpī smpjāno stimā vineyy loke hijjhādomnssṃ, upṭṭhitāss tsmiṃ smye sti hoti smmuṭṭhā. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhuno upṭṭhitā sti hoti smmuṭṭhā, stismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, stismojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, stismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “So tthāsto vihrnto tṃ dhmmṃ pññāy pviinti pviyti privīmṃsṃ āpjjti. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhu tthāsto vihrnto tṃ dhmmṃ pññāy pviinti pviyti privīmṃsṃ āpjjti, dhmmviysmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, dhmmviysmojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, dhmmviysmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “Tss tṃ dhmmṃ pññāy pviinto pviyto privīmṃsṃ āpjjto ārddhṃ hoti vīriyṃ sllīnṃ. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhuno tṃ dhmmṃ pññāy pviinto pviyto privīmṃsṃ āpjjto ārddhṃ hoti vīriyṃ sllīnṃ, vīriysmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, vīriysmojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, vīriysmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti.

   “Pssddhkāyss sukhino ittṃ smādhiyti. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhuno pssddhkāyss sukhino ittṃ smādhiyti, smādhismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, smādhismojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, smādhismojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. 
   “So tthāsmāhitṃ ittṃ sādhukṃ jjhupekkhitā hoti. Ysmiṃ smye, hikkhve, hikkhu tthāsmāhitṃ ittṃ sādhukṃ jjhupekkhitā hoti, upekkhāsmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno ārddho hoti, upekkhāsmojjhṅgṃ tsmiṃ smye hikkhu hāveti, upekkhāsmojjhṅgo tsmiṃ smye hikkhuno hāvnāpāripūriṃ ghti. Evṃ hāvitā kho, hikkhve, ttāro stipṭṭhānā evṃ hulīktā stt smojjhṅge pripūrenti. 
   . “Kthṃ hāvitā , hikkhve, stt ojjhṅgā kthṃ hulīktā vijjāvimuttiṃ pripūrenti Idh, hikkhve, hikkhu stismojjhṅgṃ hāveti viveknissitṃ virāgnissitṃ nirodhnissitṃ vossggpriṇāmiṃ. Dhmmviysmojjhṅgṃ hāveti …pe… vīriysmojjhṅgṃ hāveti… pītismojjhṅgṃ hāveti… pssddhismojjhṅgṃ hāveti… smādhismojjhṅgṃ hāveti… upekkhāsmojjhṅgṃ hāveti viveknissitṃ virāgnissitṃ nirodhnissitṃ vossggpriṇāmiṃ. Evṃ hāvitā kho, hikkhve, stt ojjhṅgā evṃ hulīktā vijjāvimuttiṃ pripūrentī”ti.
